Community Coalition of University Heights

Working Together for University Heights

Community growth brings challenges that require community-wide cooperation.

Our mission is to unite the University Heights community in advocating for resident priorities through collaboration, engagement, education, and policy change.

Keep the Pressure on the Board of Education!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the AVRP Site Plan at the San Diego Unified School District's community listening session on April 28 about redevelopment of the Brucker site at 4100 Normal Street.

According to the District, 150 people attended this session, and over 100 of these submitted signed posters to the District in support of the AVRP Site Plan. The plan was created by the district’s architect, AVRP Studios, after 7 years of community collaboration with SDUSD and input from hundreds of University Heights residents. The plan includes the following:

  • Maximum 70-foot height limit along Normal Street
  • Maximum 40-foot height limit along Campus Avenue
  • 20-foot setback
  • Preservation and rehabilitation of the Teachers Training Annex 1 and the Alice Birney Kindergarten Annex 2
  • Preservation of the heritage oak tree in front of Annex 3
  • Preservation of the heritage Ficus tree at the corner of Campus Ave. & Normal St.
  • East-west and north-south pedestrian circulation
  • Public open space in the central area
  • Outdoor plaza in front of Annex 1
  • Amphitheater behind Annex 1
  • Dog park

While the turnout at the April 28th session was an excellent start, we need the community to keep the pressure on the elected members of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education.

We have printed postcards addressed to each Board member asking that key features of the AVRP Site Plan be included in the redevelopment of the Brucker site. These include preservation and rehabilitation of Annexes 1 and 2 and preservation of the two large heritage trees--the oak tree in front of Annex 3, and the ficus at the corner of Normal Street and Campus Avenue.

Please pick up a packet of 5 postcards for yourself and your family members and neighbors from Pemberley Realty, 4645 Park Blvd., Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. and:

  • Sign each postcard
  • Complete the return address
  • Affix a first-class stamp (not a postcard stamp)
  • Mail by September 1, 2025

Thank you for your support!
